For information, the name of the local currency in Indonesia called Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). And because Bali is one of the islands in a country named Indonesia, then the currency which is using in Bali is the same one, that is IDR.

If you’ve ordered an online rent a car in Bali before departure (maybe a month or a week in advance), you have to know that in Bali, usually there are two types of car payment. Both option would be done when you’ve met with staff of the rental car at the airport of Bali. The first option is payouts using credit card (Visa or MasterCard). And the second one is payouts in cash.

2 OPTIONS FOR CAR RENTAL PAYMENT

The first option would charged your credit card in local currency, that is Indonesian Rupiah. Don’t forget that there will be a 3% additional charge from the total. They would charged the card directly at the airport, with the electronic machine called EDC (Electronic Data Captured). EDC is a common-mobile machine like you see everywhere; the supermarkets, gas station, big stores, etc, to charge the payment by credit card. At this point you do not need cash in Rupiah yet.

The first option is chosen by the car renter (it’s you, as the tourist) because they do not want to carry too much cash when traveling. The second reason is because by paying everything by using credit card, including for rental car, there will be insurance protection in the event of an incident with the car rent.

The second option is payouts in cash. Well, if you choose this second option payment, you will definitely need cash. Because usually the car rental company prefer accepting payments in Rupiah. Why? Because of the Rupiah’s exchange rate changes almost every day to other currency, so to be safe and easy to amount, they prefer to receive payments directly in Rupiah.

Does accepting payments in Rupiah is a must? Actually it does not. If you do not bring the Rupiah on your arrival, and rather bring your country of origin currency, usually the car rental company will still accept it. Just make sure your money have a relatively new version; the physic of the money, and the year made. The currency which was created in 2005 or less, the car company usually will not want to accept it. They only accept foreign money physically relatively new, and also the year stated on the money.

Why? Because when they changed it at the money changer, they will also require the same things, the physic and the manufactured year must be relatively new. They will deny it when it have a shabby look.
